Opening in just seven days, the much anticipated movie The Hunger Games was filmed in the North Carolina mountains near Asheville last year. Based on the book trilogy of science fiction written by Suzanne Collins, film locations spanned from a dense forest in which the arena that hosts the games themselves was created to a town that stood in for Katniss’ home, District 12. The film, which stars Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth, Josh Hutcherson, Elizabeth Banks, Lenny Kravitz and Woody Harrelson, filmed in Henry River Mill Village, a ghost town about one hour east of Asheville near I-40. You can see the ghost town from the road, but it’s private property and not open for tours. Arena scenes were shot in DuPont State Forest, home of several waterfalls and hiking trails, along with areas of Pisgah National Forest. Both of those are free to visit.
