For a very unique fall leaf color experience, watch the “Shadow of the Bear” in the Nantahala National Forest in the North Carolina mountains, emerging from behind Whiteside Mountain in the Highland/Cashiers area. This photo was taken TODAY. A similar shadow appears for the next three weeks. It is formed by nearby mountain peaks and begins around 5:45 PM on each sunny day. Go bear hunting and take your camera so you can shoot it! Before the bear hunt, take the spectacular nearby hike along the cliffs of Whiteside Mountain. This area is about 70 miles from Asheville.
