Keith Lockhart Conducts Brevard Music Festival Finale

The Brevard Music Center (BMC), a summer festival and institute, concludes its 75th Anniversary Season with a pair of concerts conducted by BMC Artistic Director Keith Lockhart. Mr. Lockhart will lead Friday’s concert with trumpet soloist Mark Hughes. Saturday’s concert will be led by Ken Lam featuring pianist Sandra Wright Shen. The season draws to a close Sunday afternoon as Maestro Lockhart directs the Season Finale concert with soloist Yo-Yo Ma. All concerts occur in the open-air Whittington-Pfohl Auditorium on the BMC campus.

On Friday, August 5, at 7:30PM, Keith Lockhart leads the Transylvania Symphony Orchestra in Tchaikovsky’s Marche Slave; the Trumpet Concerto by Franz Joseph Haydn; and Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 1. The soloist for the Trumpet Concerto is Mark Hughes. Mr. Hughes is a member of the BMC Artist Faculty, is Principal Trumpet of the Houston Symphony, and has toured and recorded extensively as a soloist, chamber musician, and with orchestras.

On Saturday, August 6, at 7:30PM, Ken Lam leads the Brevard Sinfonia in Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G major; and Mahler’s Symphony No. 1, “The Titan.” Pianist Sandra Wright Shen will perform as soloist in the Ravel concerto. Ms. Shen is a member of the BMC Artist Faculty and has performed as a soloist and chamber musician across the United States and throughout Asia.

On Sunday, August 7, at 3:00PM, Keith Lockhart leads the Brevard Music Center Orchestra in Haydn’s Cello Concerto No. 1 in C major; Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme; and Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9, “From the New World.” Soloist will be world-renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma, who will be making his third appearance at Brevard. The “Rococo” Variations is the work Mr. Ma performed in 1979 during his first appearance. In 2008 Mr. Ma appeared on Keith Lockhart’s inaugural concert as Artistic Director.
